PC-PTSD-5 Trauma Screener
Name of the Test: Primary Care PTSD Screen for DSM-5 (PC-PTSD-5)
Creators: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Center for PTSD.
Purpose: The PC-PTSD-5 is a self-administered screening tool designed to identify individuals who may have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
What it Tests: The PC-PTSD-5 consists of five questions that assess the presence of PTSD symptoms based on the criteria from the DSM-5. It focuses on the individual's experiences over the past month. The questions evaluate symptoms such as:
- Intrusive memories of a traumatic event
- Avoidance of reminders of the trauma
- Negative alterations in cognition and mood
- Hyperarousal or hypervigilance
- Feeling detached or estranged from others
Scoring: Each item is answered with "yes" or "no". A score of 3 or more "yes" responses suggests the need for further evaluation for PTSD.
Target Population: The PC-PTSD-5 is intended for use in adults, particularly those in primary care settings and mental health clinics. It is often used for military veterans, but it is applicable to the general population as well.
Mental Health Screening Application: We offer this test in our mental health screening application that contains a collection of commonly used screening tests for the convenience of patients and practitioners.
